Common reasons a merchant application can fail
- The provider does not support the adult/adult-AI category at all.
- The website or operating model is not reviewable enough for underwriting.
- Recurring billing, token/credit flows, refunds or cancellation are not described clearly enough.
- Processing history, chargebacks, prior termination or financial exposure changes the risk decision.
- The entity, principal, bank or target market does not fit that provider's route.
- The provider simply has a different risk appetite. That is not always something the merchant can "fix."
If Stripe or another mainstream aggregator said no
A category-level restriction is different from an underwriting decline. Stripe's current published policy says it cannot work with businesses selling or offering adult content/services. In that situation, repeatedly changing application wording does not turn the route into a fit; a specialist provider path may be required.

Current source signals
Current 2026 public guidance from specialist payment firms describes adult underwriting as case-specific and commonly focused on the business model, website, disclosures, risk history and operational controls. These are provider statements, not guaranteed approval criteria for every acquirer.
